Fresher resume guide
Resume format for freshers
Updated · meracvresume.com
Short answer
A fresher resume should be one page, in a single column, with these sections in order: name and contact details, a 2–3 line career objective, education including 12th and 10th, projects, internships or training (if you have any), skills, certifications and achievements. Write it in English for online applications, use plain headings, and back each claim with a number or a real example.

The fresher resume format, section by section
Recruiters in India look at a fresher resume for three things: can I reach this person, what have they studied, and is there any proof they can do the work? The order below answers those questions from top to bottom. The meracvresume.com builder has a step for each of these sections, so you can fill it in one at a time.
Name and contact details
Your full name, one mobile number (with +91), a professional email address, and your city and state. Add a LinkedIn or GitHub link only if the profile is complete. Under your name, write the job you want as a headline, for example “Accounts Executive (Fresher)”.
Career objective
Two or three lines: what you studied, one strength you can prove, and the role you want. Skip lines like “seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation” — every recruiter has read them a thousand times. See our career objective examples for ready lines by degree.
Education
Your latest qualification first: degree, college and university, years, and percentage or CGPA. Freshers in India should also list Class 12 and Class 10 with the board (CBSE, ICSE or your state board) and marks, because many campus and off-campus drives check them. Still studying? Write the expected year, for example “2023 – 2026 (pursuing)”.
Projects
One or two projects from college or self-study, each with a one-line description, the tools you used, and a result: users, time saved, marks, or what you learned. For freshers, projects are often the strongest proof on the page.
Internships, training or part-time work
If you have done an internship, summer training, articleship, apprenticeship or a part-time job, put it here, latest first. Write the role, organisation, city and months (for example “Jan 2025 – Mar 2025”), then 2–3 bullets about what you did. No experience yet? Leave this section out — do not invent one.
Skills
Six to twelve skills that the job post asks for and that you can talk about in an interview: software (Tally Prime, Excel, Java), methods (bank reconciliation, lesson planning) and languages you speak. Plain words only — no stars, bars or percentages. Our skills guide has lists by role.
Certifications
Courses with a certificate you can show: NPTEL, CCC, Tally, Google, AWS or a recognised institute. Name, issuer and year. Leave out one-hour webinars.
Achievements and activities
A few real highlights: a hackathon round, a class rank, an NSS or NCC role, a fest you organised, a sports team. One line each, with a number if you have one.

Resume for freshers with no experience
Almost every fresher worries about an empty experience section. You do not need one. A recruiter hiring freshers knows you have not had a full-time job; what they look for is evidence that you can learn, finish work and get along with people. That evidence can come from many places:
- College projects and the final-year project — what you built or studied, and the result.
- Summer training, industrial visits with a report, or apprenticeships — even 4–6 weeks counts.
- Part-time or family-business work — billing at a shop, tuition classes, helping with GST filing for a relative’s business.
- Responsibilities in college — class representative, placement coordinator, fest organiser, NSS or NCC volunteer.
- Self-learning with something to show — an online course with a certificate, a GitHub project, a blog, a design portfolio.
Write these the same way you would write a job: start with an action verb, say what you did, and add a number. Compare these two lines:
WeakResponsible for organising college fest.
BetterOrganised registrations for a 2-day college fest with 1,200 visitors; managed a team of 8 volunteers and a ₹40,000 budget.
The second line shows scale, responsibility and money handled — all things an employer cares about.
WeakGood knowledge of MS Excel.
BetterBuilt an Excel tracker with VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables to record attendance for 60 students during my final year.
The skill is now proven by something you actually did.
Length, layout and file type
- One page. A fresher resume fits on one A4 page. If yours runs over, shorten the objective, drop school-level activities, and cut bullets that repeat each other.
- One column, plain headings. Use “Education”, “Skills”, “Projects” — words every recruiter and applicant tracking system recognises. Two-column designs, tables and icons look nice but often scramble when software reads them. Our ATS-friendly resume guide explains why.
- Readable text. One common font, body text around 10–12 pt, and enough white space between sections. Bold only for headings and job titles.
- Dates in one style. “Jan 2025 – Mar 2025” for work, and years for education. Write “Present” for something ongoing.
- English for online applications. Software that reads resumes handles English far more reliably than Hindi. A Hindi resume is fine when you hand it to a local employer who reads Hindi or when the job notice asks for it.
- PDF, unless they ask for Word. A PDF looks the same on every phone and laptop. meracvresume.com downloads both a text-based PDF and an editable Word file — see resume format in Word.
- No photo for most private jobs. Add one only if the job notice asks for it.
Fresher resume do’s and don’ts
Do
- Read the job post and use its words for skills you really have.
- Put marks you are comfortable being asked about. Many drives have cut-offs, so be accurate.
- Use an email address with your name, such as firstname.lastname@gmail.com.
- Check spelling of your college, university and company names.
- Ask a friend to read the PDF on their phone before you send it.
Don't
- Copy a sample word for word — interviewers ask about every line.
- Write “hardworking, honest, team player” without proof.
- Add skill bars, stars or “Excel 90%” ratings.
- Use a photo, background colour or two columns for online applications.
- Stretch to two pages with hobbies and personal details.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a fresher resume be?
One page. Recruiters screening freshers spend very little time on each resume, and a single page with your education, projects and skills is easier to read than two half-empty ones.
Should I put a photo on my fresher resume?
Not for most private-sector jobs or online applications. A photo takes space, can confuse the software that reads resumes, and is not needed to shortlist you. Add one only when the job notice or form asks for it.
Should freshers write 10th and 12th marks on the resume?
Yes. Indian employers often check them, and campus or off-campus drives may have a minimum percentage. Write the board, school, year and percentage or CGPA. After a few years of work experience you can drop them.
How do I mention a degree I am still studying for?
Write the degree, college and the start and expected end year, and add “(pursuing)”. For example: “B.A. (pursuing), IGNOU, 2024 – 2027”. Add your latest semester marks if they are good.
Do I need a declaration and personal details on a fresher resume?
Not for private jobs. A declaration (“I hereby declare that the information above is true…”) and details like date of birth or marital status are optional. Add them only if a government or school application asks for them.
Should I add hobbies to my resume?
Only if a hobby says something useful about you for the job, such as chess for an analytical role or a blog for a content role. “Listening to music” and “surfing the internet” add nothing; use the space for a project instead.
