Skills for resume

Updated · meracvresume.com

Short answer

Put 6–12 skills on your resume that the job post asks for and that you can prove in an interview. Name technical skills specifically (Tally Prime, Excel Pivot Tables, Java, POS billing), add two or three soft skills only if your experience backs them up, and write them as plain words — no ratings, stars or skill bars.

Technical skills and soft skills

Recruiters think about skills in two groups, and your resume should too.

  • Technical (hard) skills are things you can be tested on: software, tools, methods, machines, languages. Tally Prime, GST returns, SQL, AutoCAD, lesson planning, IV cannulation, typing at 40 words per minute. These carry the most weight because they match what the job post asks for.
  • Soft skills are how you work: communication, teamwork, patience, leadership, problem solving. They matter a lot, but anyone can type them, so they only count when the rest of your resume shows them in action.
  • Languages you speak are worth listing separately. In India, “Hindi, English, Marathi” is a real advantage for customer-facing, sales and field jobs.

How to choose the right skills

  1. Start with the job post. Underline every tool, skill and qualification it mentions. These are the words recruiters will search for.
  2. Tick the ones that are true for you. Only keep skills you could explain or demonstrate in an interview or a test.
  3. Add your strongest extras. Anything else the role clearly needs that you are good at — even if this post did not mention it.
  4. Order by importance. Put the skills the job needs most at the front of the list.
  5. Stop at about 12. A list of 30 skills looks padded, and the important ones get lost.

How to write skills on your resume

  • Be specific. “MS Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables)” tells a recruiter far more than “Computer knowledge”.
  • Use plain words separated by commas. No stars, bars, circles or “Excel – 80%”. Nobody knows what 80% means, and software cannot read graphics.
  • Group them. Technical skills, soft skills and languages on separate lines are easy to scan.
  • Prove the important ones elsewhere. If “Tally Prime” is in your skills, a bullet in your experience or projects should show you using it.
  • Mark learning honestly. “React (learning)” or “Python (basic)” is better than overclaiming and being caught out in a technical round.

WeakSkills: Computer, Internet, MS Office, Hardworking, Quick learner

BetterTechnical: Tally Prime, GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B), MS Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables), bank reconciliation. Soft skills: attention to detail, meeting deadlines. Languages: English, Hindi.

The second version is specific to an accounts job, and every item can be checked in an interview.

Soft skills that are worth listing

Choose two or three soft skills that matter for the job, and make sure a bullet somewhere shows each one. These come up again and again in job posts:

Commonly valued soft skills

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Time management
  • Attention to detail
  • Customer handling
  • Leadership
  • Adaptability
  • Negotiation
  • Patience

WeakExcellent leadership skills.

BetterLed a team of 4 sales representatives; 2 were promoted within a year.

Do not just claim a soft skill — show it in a bullet. Then listing “Team leadership” in your skills is believable.

Skills you should not write

  • Vague computer skills: “Computer knowledge”, “Internet surfing”, “Basic computer”. Name the actual software instead.
  • Outdated tools: “Windows XP”, “MS Office 2007”. Just write the tool.
  • Personality adjectives: “Hardworking”, “Honest”, “Sincere”, “Punctual”. Show these through your experience instead.
  • Skills you cannot demonstrate: if you list Python, expect a Python question. If you cannot answer, it hurts more than leaving it out.
  • Ratings and graphics: stars, bars, pie charts and percentages. They confuse software and mean nothing to recruiters.
  • Irrelevant hobbies dressed up as skills: “Gaming”, “Movies”. Add a hobby only if it genuinely relates to the job.

Frequently asked questions

How many skills should I put on my resume?

Usually 6 to 12, chosen for the job you are applying to. Fewer, specific skills that match the job post work better than a long list.

What are the best skills for a fresher resume?

The technical skills your target job asks for (for example Tally and GST for accounts, Java and SQL for software, POS billing for retail), plus the languages you speak and two or three soft skills you can show through projects, internships or college activities.

Should I write MS Office as a skill?

Only if the job needs it, and be specific: “MS Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP)” or “MS PowerPoint presentations” is useful; “MS Office” on its own says very little.

Should I rate my skills out of 5 or in percentages?

No. Ratings are subjective, can be misread by the software that reads resumes, and invite awkward questions. Write the skill plainly and show your level through what you have done with it.

Can I add skills I am still learning?

Yes, if you mark them honestly — for example “Laravel (learning)” or “Python (basic)” — and you can talk about what you have done with them so far.

Where should the skills section go on a resume?

After your experience, education and projects works well, because those sections prove the skills. If your skills are your strongest point, keeping the section short and near the top is also fine. What matters is that it is easy to find.
